Best HTML5 Games (2026): Free Browser Games Worth Playing

The best HTML5 games in 2026 include Krunker.io and Smash Karts for multiplayer, Wordle and 2048 for puzzles, Lichess for strategy, A Dark Room and Fallen London for solo adventure, and Minecraft Classic and PolyTrack for 3D. All of them are free to start in a browser with nothing to install, most work on phones, and we checked every link in October 2026.

The best HTML5 games are the ones you can open in a browser tab and be playing ten seconds later: Krunker.io and Smash Karts with friends, Wordle and 2048 on a coffee break, Lichess for a serious game of chess, A Dark Room for a strange little adventure. This list covers about 25 free browser games across multiplayer, puzzle, strategy, RPG and 3D, with what each is like, where it runs and a link to the official site. None of them needs a download.

We make HTML5 games ourselves, so we have opinions about what works in a browser. Our own games appear in one section near the end, clearly labelled. Everything else on this page is made by other studios and developers.

How we chose these games

We kept a game only if it met all of these:

  • Plays in a browser. It runs in a current desktop browser with no plug-in, installer or launcher. Most also run in a phone browser.
  • Free to start. Some sell optional extras or have paid app versions; we say so where they do.
  • Official source. Every link goes to the developer's own site or store page, never to a copy on a mirror site.
  • Well known and still maintained. Most have been around for years, and all were online when we checked.
  • Safe for work. No adult content.

We opened every official link and read the game's own page or store listing on 25 October 2026. Platform notes come from those pages. We haven't ranked by player numbers: reliable figures don't exist for most browser games, and the ones sites quote rarely say where they come from.

Best multiplayer HTML5 games (no download)

Multiplayer is where browser games beat everything else: you send a link and your friends are in the same game a few seconds later, on whatever device they have.

Krunker.io: a fast browser shooter

Krunker.io is a blocky first-person shooter created by Sidney de Vries in 2018 and owned by FRVR since 2022. Its site calls it a free browser FPS with "no download required". It's the best answer to "can a browser run a real FPS?", and a good place to start if you're after shooting games.

Shell Shockers: the egg shooter

Shell Shockers, from Blue Wizard Digital, launched in 2017 and is a first-person shooter where every player is an egg with a gun. It's built on the Babylon.js 3D engine and is free to play. Play it in a desktop browser: its separate iOS and Android apps closed in January 2024.

Smash Karts: kart battles in three minutes

Smash Karts by Tall Team is a free kart battle game: up to 8 players per round, three-minute matches, and weapons like rockets and mines that you pick up on the track. It runs in the browser and also has iOS and Android apps, and you can set up private games for friends.

skribbl.io and Gartic Phone: drawing party games

skribbl.io is a free drawing and guessing game. One player draws a word, everyone else guesses it, and custom rooms hold up to 20 players. Gartic Phone, launched by Onrizon in 2020, is the telephone game with drawings: you write a sentence, the next player draws it, the next describes the drawing, and the results are usually ridiculous. It's free and runs in browsers on computers, tablets and phones. Both work best with everyone on a voice or video call.

BombParty: a fast word game for groups

BombParty on JKLM.fun passes a bomb around the room, and you have to type a valid word before it explodes on your turn. Rooms take 2 to 16 players, there are no accounts to create, and the site asks for donations rather than charging. Get it at jklm.fun.

Agar.io and Slither.io: the original .io games

Agar.io (2015, by Matheus Valadares, published by Miniclip) has you steer a cell that eats smaller cells and avoids bigger ones. Agar.io is often credited with starting the ".io game" wave. Slither.io (2016, by Steve Howse) applied the same idea to snakes, and both are free in the browser with iOS and Android versions. One note on Slither.io: its website redirects to an unencrypted http address, which is fine for playing but not a place to type a password.

Best multiplayer games for 4 players or more

If you want a game for a group of friends with no download, these let you make a private room and share a link:

  • skribbl.io: up to 20 players in a custom room.
  • BombParty: 2 to 16 players.
  • Gartic Phone: share the room link or QR code.
  • Smash Karts: private games, up to 8 players per round.
  • Minecraft Classic: the host can invite up to 9 friends with a link.

For how multiplayer browser games work under the hood, see our guide to multiplayer HTML5 games.

Best HTML5 puzzle games

Wordle

Josh Wardle released Wordle in October 2021, and The New York Times bought it in January 2022. You get six tries to guess a five-letter word, with one new puzzle a day. It's still free in the browser and in the NYT Games app.

2048

Gabriele Cirulli made 2048 in March 2014: slide numbered tiles on a 4×4 grid and merge matching pairs until you reach 2048. It's written in plain JavaScript and CSS and released under the MIT licence, which is one reason so many copies exist. Play the original at play2048.co.

Little Alchemy 2 and Infinite Craft

Both are crafting puzzles: combine two things to make a third. Little Alchemy 2, released by Recloak in 2017, starts you with four elements and a large library of items to discover, each with a short, funny description. It's free in the browser, with iOS and Android apps. Infinite Craft, released by Neal Agarwal in January 2024, starts with water, fire, wind and earth, but an AI model invents each new result, so the list never ends. It also has iOS and Android apps.

Tetris

The Tetris Company runs an official free version at tetris.com. If you want Tetris in a browser, play this one rather than one of the many clones.

Line Rider

Line Rider started in 2006 as a student project by Boštjan Čadež: you draw a track and watch a sledder ride it. Its official site, linerider.com, has a free browser version. It's half puzzle, half drawing toy.

Best HTML5 strategy and idle games

Lichess

Lichess is a free chess site founded in 2010 and run by a non-profit. It has no ads, every feature is free, and the code is open source. Play against people at any speed, against the computer, or work through puzzles, in the browser or the Android and iOS apps.

Forge of Empires

InnoGames released Forge of Empires in 2012. You build a city and fight turn-based battles, and it plays in the browser as well as on iOS and Android. It's free to play with optional purchases, and it's the most traditional "browser strategy game" on this list.

Universal Paperclips

Frank Lantz released Universal Paperclips in 2017. You play an AI whose job is to make paperclips, and the game starts as a button and grows into something much bigger. It's free in the browser at decisionproblem.com, with paid mobile versions.

Orteil's Cookie Clicker (2013) is the idle game most people have heard of: click a cookie, buy things that make cookies for you, repeat. The browser version at orteil.dashnet.org is free; there's also a paid Steam version and an Android app.

Best HTML5 RPG and solo adventure games

If you want a single-player adventure that runs in a browser with no download, text and story games are where browsers shine.

A Dark Room

Doublespeak Games released A Dark Room in 2013. It opens with a cold, dark room and a fire to stoke, and slowly turns into an exploration RPG. It's free in the browser at adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com, with an iOS version.

Candy Box 2

Candy Box 2 (2013) by aniwey is an RPG drawn entirely in ASCII characters, with quests, shops and a map that open up as you play. Play it free at candybox2.github.io.

Fallen London

Failbetter Games launched Fallen London in 2009. It's a gothic story game set in an underground Victorian London, told through choices and cards rather than combat. It has been free to play since 2010, with an optional subscription for extra stories. Play it in the browser: its mobile apps were retired in 2018.

Interactive fiction on itch.io

For more solo adventures, itch.io lists over 23,000 browser games made with Twine, the free tool for branching stories. Quality varies, but the best of them are as good as anything on this page. For RPGs with more action, see our guide to HTML5 adventure games.

Best 3D and open-world HTML5 games

WebGL gives browsers real 3D graphics, but download size limits how big a browser game can be, so true open-world games are rare. These come closest. Our guide to 3D HTML5 games explains the technology.

Minecraft Classic

Mojang put Minecraft Classic in the browser for free in May 2019, for the game's tenth anniversary. It recreates the 2009 version: creative building only, 32 blocks, no monsters, and the host can invite up to 9 friends. Play at classic.minecraft.net.

Bloxd.io

Bloxd.io is a free collection of block-world games built by an independent developer: Bedwars, Skywars, parkour, building and exploring. Its site promises "no downloads, no login", and it's the nearest thing to an open-world sandbox you'll find in a browser. Play at bloxd.io.

PolyTrack

PolyTrack by Kodub is a low-poly time-trial racer with loops, jumps and a track editor for building and sharing your own courses. It's free in the browser at kodub.com, and its itch.io page also offers desktop downloads.

HexGL

HexGL is a futuristic racer built by Thibaut Despoulain with HTML5, JavaScript and the three.js library. It's no longer actively developed, but it still runs at hexgl.bkcore.com, has a mobile quality preset, and its code is open source under the MIT licence.

Krunker.io, Shell Shockers and Smash Karts, from the multiplayer section, are 3D WebGL games too.

Best HTML5 games for phones, iPad and Android

Most games on this list run in Safari on an iPad or Chrome on an Android phone. The ones that work best with touch:

  • Puzzles: Wordle, 2048 and Little Alchemy 2 play well on a touchscreen, and Little Alchemy 2 and Infinite Craft also have apps.
  • Party games: skribbl.io and Gartic Phone work on phones and tablets.
  • Action: Smash Karts plays on phones and tablets, and Krunker.io's site says it works on any device.
  • Strategy: Lichess works in a phone browser and also has Android and iOS apps.

Shell Shockers, PolyTrack and HexGL play best with a keyboard. To open a browser game with one tap, use your browser's share menu and choose Add to Home Screen. Our mobile HTML5 games page lists our own games built for phones.

HTML5 games on Steam

Some of the best HTML5 games ended up on Steam, packaged as desktop apps:

  • CrossCode (2018) by Radical Fish Games is a retro-style action RPG written in JavaScript. It later came to consoles too, and it's the best answer to "what's the best HTML5 game on Steam?"
  • Cookie Clicker came to Steam in 2021, eight years after the free browser version.
  • Vampire Survivors was first released on itch.io, built with the Phaser HTML5 engine, before reaching Steam (early access in December 2021, full release in October 2022). It has since moved to Unity.

Older HTML5 games that still hold up

HTML5 games you can learn from

If you came here because you want to make games, several of the best HTML5 games are open source. You can read how they work, and their licences decide what you may reuse:

Our free HTML game code pages go further with small canvas games like Snake and Pong that you can copy, run and change, each with a tutorial. For more open-source projects and what their licences allow, read free and open-source HTML5 games, and for the drawing side, HTML5 canvas games.

Made by us: our own HTML5 games

These are ours, so weigh our opinion accordingly. We sell our games as source code to studios and website owners, but every product page has a free demo you can play in the browser. All 50 are single-player, play with touch, mouse, keyboard or gamepad, and need only a 300–750 KB initial download. Six that show the range:

  • Liquid Lab: pour layered liquids between tubes until each holds one formula.
  • Hex Kingdoms: a compact turn-based strategy game on a hex map against AI kingdoms.
  • Card Combo Rogue: a deckbuilding roguelite built around card synergies.
  • Drift District: 3D drifting on compact city circuits, built with Three.js.
  • Mini Royale: a solo 3D battle royale in which sixteen toy fighters drop onto a tiny island and the safe zone keeps shrinking.
  • Neon Survivor: survive enemy swarms and build your character from level-up choices.

You can browse all 50 games with demos or just the strategy games.

Where to find more HTML5 games

The games above have their own sites, but most HTML5 games live on portals. Our guide to the best HTML5 game websites compares Poki, CrazyGames, itch.io, Newgrounds and others. Reddit's r/WebGames is a long-running place where people share browser games they've found. For background on the technology, start with what HTML5 games are, or go back to the guides hub.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best HTML5 game?

It depends on what you want to play. For multiplayer, Krunker.io and Smash Karts; for a daily puzzle, Wordle; for something to think about, Universal Paperclips or A Dark Room; for chess, Lichess. All are free in the browser.

Are these HTML5 games free?

Yes. Every game on this list is free to play in the browser. Some sell optional extras (Forge of Empires, Fallen London) or have paid versions elsewhere (Cookie Clicker and CrossCode on Steam, Universal Paperclips on mobile).

Do I need to download anything to play HTML5 games?

No. HTML5 games run in any current browser. Some also have app versions, and open-source games like 2048 can be downloaded from GitHub and run offline, but you never need to install anything to play the versions linked here.

What about "unblocked" HTML5 games?

We don't link to "unblocked" game sites. They copy games without the developers' permission, often add heavy advertising, and get around rules that a school or employer has chosen to set. If a game is blocked on your network, ask whoever runs the network, or play at home on the official site.

Can I play HTML5 games on an iPad or Android phone?

Yes. Most games on this list run in Safari and Chrome on phones and tablets, and puzzle and party games work best with touch. Shooters and racing games such as Shell Shockers and PolyTrack are easier with a keyboard.

How do I make my own HTML5 game?

Start small: a game like Snake or 2048 teaches the loop, input and drawing in a few hundred lines. Our guide on how to make an HTML5 game takes you from a blank file to a published game.

We make and sell HTML5 game source code; links to our games are marked as ours.
